Interview by Donovan Johnson
Hi Louis! We've been familiar with your work for a while at Enlightened Piano Radio, but some of our listeners may be just getting to know you. Can you tell us a bit about yourself?
I am from Denver Colorado and have been playing the piano all my life. I have been blessed with unbelievable support from my family to pursue this dream of mine to play and write music. Recently I have made some incredible friendships that also encourage and support my dream. I would be so lost without all the support. I recently signed a contract with a record label in India so I will be given the opportunity to tour India and Dubai within the next couple years. I am amazed at the outpouring of support I have received from new friends in India and the Middle East.
We understand that you just released a new recording titled "Closer." It seems to be getting some great response! Tell us a little bit about the album.
Even I am stunned at how well it turned out! I say that because it is produced by Will Ackerman and Tom Eaton and it has an all star cast of musicians appearing on the CD. For those who don’t know, Will Ackerman is a Grammy Award winning guitarist and producer, and the founder of Windham Hill Records. The musicians who appear on the album with me are Eugene Friesen cello, Tony Levin bass, Jeff Oster flugelhorn, Jill Haley English horn, Jeff Haynes percussion, Will Ackerman guitar, and Noah Wilding vocals. When I listen to the album with those musicians playing on it, sometimes it takes my breath away. They make the album incredibly special.
What are some of your favorite tracks from the album? And what inspired them?
Aurora is the first track and is very special to me. It was written in the hours and days following the horrific tragedy in my community, the Aurora Theater Shooting in 2012. The song is very introspective and purposefully simple. 100% of my proceeds form this song will be donated to COVA, the Colorado Organization for Victims Assistance for the Aurora shooting victims and their families.
Sailing is wonderful because it has almost every musician appearing in the song. That makes it very special to me,
Finally Tears was written after my father passed away. The song starts with the notes D-A-D and is a tribute to my father.
In which parts of the country have you performed? What were some of your favorites?
I’ve pretty much performed all over the country from the east coast to the west coast. The Creative Life Center in Sedona Arizona is wonderfully special to me. Also a quaint little community theater in Willits California holds a piece of my heart. I could write pages about my experiences at amazing venues with wonderful people.
How long have you been playing the piano? And how old were you when you started playing?
I started playing the piano at 5 so 20 years…..30 years….50 years….sheesh!
What is your creative process when you write music? Do you have a specific way in which you go about composing?
It really depends on the genre of music I am writing. When I write jazz oriented music I begin by trying to find interesting chord progressions and build from there. With so called New Age music I begin with a melody. But most often I begin with an emotion that needs released and the music that pours out is just what it is without conscious intervention on my part.
Do you have a favorite of your recordings?
My new album Closer is by far my favorite. In fact I wish I could go back and just start over with this recording!
Best of luck to you Louis! Where can we find you online is we want to listen to or buy some of your music?
Thank you Donovan. And thank you for all you do to give our music exposure. It is very generous of you to promote other people’s music when the music you create yourself is spectacular. My music is on just about every digital outlet, iTunes, Amazon.com, etc. My website is www.louismusic.com.
Thank you for spending some time with us today!
Thank you Donovan, and thanks to everyone who spent the time getting to know me. I hope our paths cross soon.
